13 candidates contesting for single seat in parliament

13 candidates in total have applied to run in the By-elections on June 25 for the single seat in parliament vacated following the resignation of People’s Party (HP) leader Kudret Özersay from parliament last year.

Six of the candidates are nominees of political parties while the remaining seven are independent.

The High Electoral Council announced the provisional list of the candidates on Thursday.

There is a two-day objection period for the candidates on June 2 and 3 with the final list published on Sunday.

Objections regarding the candidates can be made to the High Electoral Council between 8am and 5pm on both days.

The official propaganda period will begin on Monday, June 5.

The candidates of the political parties are as follows:

  • The Republican Turkish Party (CTP): Sami Özuslu
  • The National Unity Party (UBP): Ali Başman
  • The Democrat Party (DP): Serhan Aktunç
  • The Social Democratic Party (TDP): Tacan Reynar
  • Rebirth Party (YDP): Figen Yaman Lesinger
  • Independence Movement: Umut Ersoy.

 

Abdullah Korkmazhan, Mert Taşkın, Alper Özsakınç, Meriç Erülkü, Çetin Sadeli, Nazım Özsever and Talip Sancar are running as independent candidates.

Elections will also be held to elect a mukhtar for the Lefkoşa, Yenicami neighbourhood.

A total of four candidates are running for the post.
