14th Lefke Hurma Festival realized

The 14th Lefke Hurma Festival or Date Festival, organized in cooperation with the Lefke Tourism Association and Lefke Municipality, was held on Sunday.

The festival, which was organized to promote the date palm product and increase its economic value, support the producers and to keep the Cypriot culture alive, took place at the Lefke Market Place.

Delivering an opening speech at the festival Lefke Mayor Aziz Kaya noted that they emphasized the theme of peace as well as production in the festival this year and wished the wars in the nearby geography to come to an end soon.

The President of Lefke Tourism Association Hasan Karlıtaş for his part stated that when people mention Lefke, the date palm trees come to mind noting that the date palm trees are in danger of the red palm beetle and that the necessary support should be given to keep these trees alive and thriving.

He also called for the Lefke region to be given the value it deserves and for necessary investments to be made to the region.

Once the speeches were completed, the festival continued with a performance by the Lefke Municipality’s Folk Dances Minors Team.

Various activities were also organized throughout the day.

In addition to date products, locally produced foods specific to Cyprus, beverages and handicrafts were all for sale at the stands that were set up at the festival.
