
With only two weeks left to the June 25 by-elections, the head of the High Electoral Council Narin Ferdi Şefik, shared details concerning voting.
Şefik announced that there will be 713 ballot boxes set up across the country for a total of 210,121 voters.
She also mentioned the changes in the ballot paper and seal, stating that party candidates will be placed at the top, while independent candidates will be placed at the bottom of the ballot paper, and emphasized that only one “YES” stamp can be placed on the entire ballot paper.
Şefik reminded that it is prohibited to report, predict, or comment on the results until 7pm on the day of the election
The head of the High Electoral Council Narin Şefik who spoke to the TAK news agency on the upcoming by-elections on June 25 reminded that there will be an election for one member of parliament and one mukhtar for Lefkoşa’s Yenicami neighbourhood.
She pointed out that there were a total of 13 candidates running for the single seat in parliament vacated by the leader of the People’s Party Kudret Özersay who resigned, six of which were political party candidates and 7 independent.
Şefik added that there were four candidates running for the post of Yenicami Muhktar.
The head of the electoral council also pointed out that changes had been made to the ballot papers due to the amendments made to the Election and Referendum Law, stating that party candidates will be listed at the top of the ballot paper and independent candidates at the bottom.
Şefik explained that voters will cast their votes by stamping the “YES” stamp once inside the squares of the party or independent candidate sections.
She also mentioned that brochures explaining how to vote will be sent to voters along with their voter cards, and that the members of the ballot box committees will receive training as of June 19.
Şefik also said that a total of 210,121 eligible voters will be able to cast their votes at the 713 ballot boxes set up across the country.
The number of voters in the last general election was 208,236 and the turnout rate was 64.63 percent.
According to this, the number of voters increased by 1,885 since December 25, 2022.
Şefik noted that voters must have their ID cards when voting.
Voting stations will be open between 8am and 6pm.
Şefik reminded that it is prohibited to report, predict, or comment on the results until 7pm on the day of the election and that results could be shared after 9pm.
