The 25th Eco Day event, aimed at preserving and passing on Cypriot culture to future generations, took place yesterday in Büyükkonuk village square, organized by Mehmetçik Büyükkonuk Municipality.
The event drew participation from government officials, including President Ersin Tatar, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu, and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, who emphasized the importance of cultural heritage and community service.
The event, a tradition started 17 years ago, has become a hallmark of cultural celebration, attracting both locals and visitors to experience the rich heritage of the region.
In her speech, Mehmetçik Büyükkonuk Mayor Fatma Çimen Tuğlu highlighted the responsibility of preserving and promoting culture, noting how Eco Day evolved from a dream into a recognized brand over the years.
She emphasized the importance of continuing these efforts to keep the local culture alive.
Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu pointed out the significance of cultural activities in different regions, stating, “It is crucial to sustain our culture and pass it on to future generations.”
He also announced the resolution of a treatment facility issue in the Bafra tourism area, affirming the government’s commitment to providing the best service for environmental and cultural preservation.
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel expressed his satisfaction with participating in an event that celebrates the unity of the country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Despite various challenges, he reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fulfilling promises made to the public.
“No one can stop us on our path to service, because our mission is the TRNC, and our concern is our people. We will continue to serve our citizens through our projects,” he stated.
Üstel also mentioned the ongoing infrastructure and investment projects carried out in cooperation with Türkiye and the measures being taken to mitigate the impact of the global economic crisis on the people.
President Ersin Tatar began his remarks by acknowledging those who protect the country’s nature, culture, and art.
He highlighted the positive impact of investments in Bafra, which have increased the region’s value as a tourism destination and provided significant support to the national economy.
Tatar emphasized that preserving cultural heritage and sharing it with younger generations is key to promoting the TRNC internationally.
He reiterated his commitment to representing the Turkish Cypriots’ cause on the international stage, emphasizing the potential for a sovereignty-based agreement with the support of Türkiye.
Addressing recent rumours before his departure to New York, Tatar dismissed them as baseless attempts to weaken his position, questioning their sincerity.
The event continued with traditional folk dance performances and musical presentations.
Throughout the day, stalls showcased local Cypriot food and beverages, providing a taste of the island’s unique culture.
