The Lapta Alsancak Karşıyaka Fishermen’s Association organized the 3rd Izmarit – Picarel Fish Festival for the benefit of the Barrier-Free Fishing Ground Project at the Lapta Fishing Shelter.
The festival was organised with the contributions of Lapta Alsancak Çamlıbel Municipality and local tradesmen.
President Ersin Tatar who was among those who visited the festival met with the public and received information about the project to be carried out.
The President of the Lapta Alsancak Karşıyaka Fishermen’s Association Ertunç Birinci in his speech said that the festival was organized this year with the aim of raising money for a barrier-free fishing place in the Lapta Fishing Shelter.
The Mayor of the Lapta Alsancak Çamlıbel Municipality Fırat Ataser for his part stated that they are excited for supporting the project aimed at persons with disabilities.
Drawing attention to the problems of the Lapta Fishing Shelter, Ataser added that the shelter should be expanded and upgraded.
Stating that such a big project could not be carried out with contributions from the municipality alone, Ataser said that they will contribute to any project to be prepared by the government.
President Ersin Tatar for his part stated that fishing was an important part of Turkish Cypriot culture and the country’s economy.
Tatar also expressed his belief that the government will take the necessary steps to support the country’s fishing sector.
The proceeds from the event will be used to create an area in the western part of the Lapta Fishing Shelter where disabled citizens will be able to access the sea and fish.
