The 50th anniversary of the Yeşilırmak Resistance and the village’s liberation are being celebrated with ceremonies on Thursday.
Martyrs who fell during the resistance are being remembered at two separate ceremonies.
The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly, Zorlu Töre who issued a written message on the occasion said that Turkish Cypriot people will continue to exist on the island.
In a message issued to highlight the significance of the day, the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly, Zorlu Töre said that September 5, 1974 was an important day when the heroic Turkish Cypriot fighters defending the enclave were joined by Turkish forces.
“September 5 is both a day of resistance, written in history with glory and honour as Yeşilırmak was incorporated with the remainder of the TRNC, and a day of union with the Turkish army. We take pride in commemorating the 50th anniversary of this glorious victory” Töre stressed.
The Parliamentary Speaker noted that the inhabitants of Yeşilırmak had put up a heroic resistance against Greek Cypriot attacks as Turkish forces had not been able to reach the area in time during the first phase of the Turkish Peace Operation.
“They never abandoned their belief that the motherland would rescue them,” he said.
Töre concluded his remarks by commemorating all those who fell in the defence of the village.
