The 59th anniversary of the Limassol Resistance and those who became martyrs during the resistance were commemorated on Monday.
A ceremony was held at the Limassol-Girne Martyrs and Freedom Monument on Monday morning.
Wreaths were laid, a minutes silence was observed and flags were raised to the reciting of the national anthem at the Limassol-Girne and Freedom Monument in Girne.
Delivering a speech at the ceremony, President Ersin Tatar said that those who fell in 1974 fighting for the freedom of the Turkish Cypriot people will never be forgotten.
He added that they will never allow the bitter experiences of the past to be relived and that the struggle continued.
Tatar said that the pain, suffering and atrocities committed by the Greek Cypriots against Turkish Cypriots with the goal of uniting the island with Greece were still fresh.
“We owe our presence here today to the heroism and sacrifices of our martyrs,” he said.
Also touching upon the result of the elections in south Cyprus, President Ersin Tatar said that what the outcome of the elections will bear in terms of the Cyprus issue will become evident in the future.
He added that the 1974 Turkish Peace Operation was a turning point for Turkish Cypriots and that there will be no going back to the pre-1974 conditions.
Also touching upon the earthquake in Türkiye, Tatar said that it was a time for unity and solidarity.
“I hail the joint efforts by Türkiye and the TRNC to heal the country’s wounds following such a disaster,” he said.
