A panel and photo exhibition titled “Rauf Denktaş on his 101st Birthday” were organized by Ankara Social Sciences University to honor the legacy of the founding president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Rauf Denktaş.
Speaking at the event, Türkiye’s Ambassador to Lefkoşa, Yasin Ekrem Serim, described Denktaş as a leader who dedicated his life to defending the rights, independence, and freedom of the Turkish Cypriot people.
Serim emphasized Denktaş’s multifaceted legacy as a jurist, diplomat, thinker, teacher, and artist, calling him an invaluable figure not only for Turkish Cypriots but for the entire Turkish world.
“Rauf Denktaş was a steadfast leader who provided hope during the most challenging times for the Turkish Cypriot people, standing firm against oppression and advocating for their existence and equality,” Serim said.
He added that Denktaş’s unwavering commitment to his cause played a critical role in the establishment of the TRNC, enabling Turkish Cypriots to live in peace under their own flag.
Serim reiterated Türkiye’s ongoing support for the TRNC, stating that Ankara remains committed to standing by Northern Cyprus in all areas.
He noted that ensuring future generations embrace the ideals of independence, freedom, and unity is essential to preserving Denktaş’s legacy.

President Ersin Tatar emphasized that the two-state solution approach his administration advocates is a continuation of Denktaş’s vision.
Tatar remarked that federation-based negotiations have repeatedly failed, underscoring that Denktaş always believed in the indispensability of the TRNC as a sovereign state.
Reflecting on the struggle years and the hardships faced by Turkish Cypriots, Tatar highlighted Denktaş’s role as a leader during a period when even traveling between villages was dangerous.
“The leadership of Denktaş brought us through those dark times, and his legacy continues to guide us today,” Tatar stated.
Tatar also paid tribute to Dr. Fazıl Küçük, the leader of the Freedom Struggle, who handed over the reins to Denktaş.
He noted that Denktaş became an internationally recognized leader following the 1974 Peace Operation, a pivotal moment in Turkish Cypriot history.
Addressing critics, Tatar remarked, “Even those who once opposed Denktaş now admit he was right.”
He warned against threats to the Turkish Cypriot national identity posed by a single sovereignty model and affirmed that his policies align with those of Türkiye, as expressed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Following the speeches, the panel commenced with discussions on Denktaş’s legacy and the future of the TRNC. The event concluded with attendees touring the photo exhibition dedicated to the founding president.
