The leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman has stressed the importance of political equality in resolving the Cyprus issue.

The leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Tufan Erhürman, shared his views on the Cyprus issue during a program he attended.

Stating that the CTP’s stance and objectives were clear, Erhürman highlighted that the most challenging issue for the Greek Cypriot leadership to accept was political equality.

“Political equality must be accepted in an informal meeting beforehand. I will not negotiate this because it is a UN Security Council resolution. If matters included in Security Council decisions are not open for discussion, then political equality is also non-negotiable. Christodoulides has not accepted this so far, but in our meetings with DISY and AKEL, we have heard them say that political equality is not a matter for debate” the CTP leader said.

Underlining that these were not preconditions but commitments made by the United Nations, Erhürman added, “The UN must stand by its own promises.”

Stating that he did not believe Türkiye holds the view that the Greek Cypriots can act as they wish on matters such as hydrocarbons, maritime jurisdiction areas, and security, he stressed, “The correct approach is that Turkish Cypriots and Türkiye, as a guarantor power, must also have a say in these matters.”

Referring to the upcoming presidential elections, Erhürman said, “We have an election ahead of us. We will express our will and make our decision. We must not forget how significant a turning point this is.”
