Champion Angels Sports Complex inaugurated

The Gazimağusa Türk Maarif College Champion Angels Sports Complex, renovated with funding from the European Union and contributions from the UNDP, the Ministry of National Education, and Gazimağusa Municipality, was officially inaugurated with a ceremony.

The event served not only as an opening but also as a tribute to the “Champion Angels” members of the school’s secondary school volleyball team who tragically lost their lives in the February 6 earthquake in Türkiye in 2023.

Speakers emphasized that the complex stands as a testament to their dreams and legacy.

Speaking on behalf of the European Commission, Stefan Simosas underlined that the ceremony was more than just an opening—it was a commemoration of the Champion Angels.

Representing the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Jakhongir Khaydarov described the facility as a symbol of resilience and determination, providing a safe space for young athletes.

He highlighted its multi-functional design, catering to various sports.

Selçuk Yürükoğulları, speaking on behalf of the EU Coordination Center, emphasized the collective responsibility to keep the memory of Champion Angels alive.

He expressed confidence that young athletes trained at the facility would continue the legacy of the lost students.

Ministry of National Education Undersecretary Aytunç Şirket extended gratitude to all those who contributed to the realization of the project.

Gazimağusa Mayor Süleyman Uluçay, in his speech, reflected on the deep sorrow the earthquake brought to the city.

He stressed the importance of initiatives like this sports complex in preserving the memory of the Champion Angels.

Ruşen Yücesoylu Karakaya, President of the Champion Angels Association, also addressed the attendees, reminding them that the lost students were role models for the entire community.

She expressed appreciation for all stakeholders who contributed to the project.

Following the speeches, the complex was officially opened.

The Turkish Maarif College girls’ volleyball team played a symbolic match in memory of the Angels, marking the beginning of the facility’s new chapter in fostering young athletes.
