Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis spoke to journalists following the expanded informal Cyprus meeting held in Geneva.

He stated that the discussions were shaped within the framework of confidence-building measures and addressed issues such as mine clearance, environmental concerns, youth initiatives, and the restoration of cemeteries.

Pointing out that UN Secretary-General António Guterres had decided to appoint a special envoy for the next steps in the negotiations, Gerapetritis stressed, “It is extremely important that the Cyprus issue is currently at the forefront of the UN agenda. Informal meetings will continue both bilaterally and in a five-party format.”

Noting that a new five-party meeting was expected at the end of July, he added, “Although the position of the Turkish Cypriot side differs from the framework set by the UN Security Council resolutions, establishing dialogue for confidence-building is crucial. The only solution is the reunification of the island.”
