Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan evaluated the Geneva meeting and the Cyprus issue.
“The UN Secretary-General is truly a leader we appreciate, a qualified figure who, to some extent, reflects the conscience of the international system. Our President accepted the proposal for an informal meeting on the Cyprus issue to demonstrate our constructive stance”, said Fidan.
Addressing the Cyprus issue, Fidan emphasized that the reality on the island is clear, two communities living separately with their own institutions.
“The fact that one is recognized as a state with full access to all opportunities while the other remains unrecognized is the root cause of injustice on the island. This injustice must be rectified” said Fidan.
He said that in the past they had placed their trust in the arbitration of the international system and accepted UN-backed solution proposals, but the Greek Cypriots rejected them.
“Today, the situation on the ground has changed. This reality must be reflected in political solution efforts” said Fidan.
