Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev delivered a clear message about the recognition of the TRNC during his speech at an international forum held in his country.
In his speech, Aliyev said, “Our brothers in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) can be assured that we will always stand by them in their pursuit of international recognition as an independent state.”
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended and spoke at the international forum titled “Towards a New World Order” held at ADA University in Baku.
In his speech, Aliyev also touched on the recognition of the TRNC.
Aliyev stated that they will always stand by their TRNC brothers and sisters to ensure the international community recognizes the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as an independent state.
Speaking on relations with the TRNC, Aliyev noted that he is in contact with President Ersin Tatar.
He added that Azerbaijan played an active role in the TRNC gaining observer status in the Organization of Turkic States and that he had invited President Ersin Tatar to the Informal Summit of the Organization held in Shusha.
Reminding that the TRNC flag was flown during the summit in Shusha, Aliyev said, “We are always by the side of our brothers. Our policy has always been clear. We have no other agenda on this issue. We only think about how we can help our brothers preserve their statehood. They deserve this historically and through their actions.”
Noting that while the TRNC said “yes” to the Annan Plan, the Greek Cypriot administration rejected it, President Ilham Aliyev stated,
“And what happened afterward? The Greek Cypriot side was admitted into the European Union. Is that fair? This is a clear example of double standards. Our brothers in the TRNC can rest assured that we will always support them in their efforts to be recognized as an independent state.”
