Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly, Ziya Öztürkler, stressed that the geopolitical importance of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was of concern to the entire Turkic world.
Öztürkler noted that the efforts of Turkic States to open embassies in South Cyprus were influenced by economic cooperation carried out with the European Union.
Stressing the importance of correctly understanding the national cause shared with motherland Türkiye, he stated that it must continue to be explained tirelessly and more effectively.
The Speaker of the Assembly Ziya Öztürkler evaluated the current agenda during a television program.
Stating that the Turkish Cypriot people had gone through very difficult times, he stressed the need to act calmly and conduct thorough analyses.
Öztürkler reiterated that economic cooperation with the European Union has influenced the efforts by Turkic States to open embassies in South Cyprus.
He underlined that the national cause pursued in cooperation with Turkey must be well understood and explained persistently.
Öztürkler affirmed that they will continue to convey the message that the recognition of the TRNC was a duty for the Turkic world.
Pointing out that the Eastern Mediterranean was a critical region where energy corridors intersect, maritime jurisdictions are in dispute, and regional powers are engaged in a struggle for influence, he said, “Within this strategic basin, the TRNC holds a unique significance not only for Türkiye but also for all Turkic States.”
Characterizing the attempts by the Greek Cypriot administration to block TRNC businesspeople and the real estate sector as efforts targeting the island’s economic development, the Parliamentary Speaker highlighted the real estate sector as having a crucial role in the TRNC’s economic progress.
He further stressed that this sector, which attracts both local and international investors, contributed to the island’s economic growth, created employment, and enhanced social welfare.
Stating that the Greek Cypriot administration’s efforts to obstruct this sector aimed to undermine the TRNC’s economic potential on the international stage, Öztürkler stressed that the TRNC must respond to such initiatives with unity and strengthen economic solidarity.
Addressing the remarks made by Greek Cypriot Parliament Speaker Annita Dimitriu regarding the European Union army, Öztürkler interpreted her statement—that Türkiye cannot participate in European defence planning if it fails to fulfil its obligations toward South Cyprus -as an anti-Türkiye stance.
Underlining that such rhetoric damaged regional peace and cooperation, he stressed that the TRNC would continue to defend its rights and would stand against such statements in coordination with Türkiye.
“These statements contribute to rising political tensions in the region, and demonstrate the need for the TRNC to further strengthen its diplomatic efforts and stand firmly by the two-state solution” Öztürkler stated.
Noting that Türkiye’s strategic role in the region, and its cooperation with the TRNC, served as a vital counterbalance to the Greek Cypriot administration’s rhetoric, the Parliamentary Speaker stressed that this partnership was critically important for preserving regional peace and stability.
