President Ersin Tatar has reiterated the importance of sovereignty and self-determination in a statement marking the 105th anniversary of the opening of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and the celebration of 23 April National Sovereignty and Children’s Day.
In his message, President Tatar underlined that 23 April, a national holiday gifted to children by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, symbolizes freedom, independence, and the right of a people to govern themselves.
“If you are not a sovereign people, you cannot govern yourselves or make your own decisions — others will govern you,” he said.
Tatar recalled the historical struggle of the Turkish Cypriots, drawing parallels with Türkiye’s own path to independence.
He stated that thanks to the sacrifices made and the unwavering support of Türkiye, the Turkish Cypriots have evolved from a colonial community into a sovereign nation with statehood.
The President emphasized that the TRNC would persist in its efforts to make its voice heard internationally and to strengthen diplomatic and institutional ties.
He noted the growing cooperation with the Organization of Turkic States (TDT), highlighting the upcoming meeting of the TDT Council of Elders in the TRNC on 1–2 May 2025 as a significant milestone.
“We, the Turkish Cypriots, inspired by Atatürk and our forefathers, have come this far without bowing down, without giving up, by resisting and sacrificing. We will continue to fight for our proudly founded state until we reach the highest level,” Tatar concluded, extending his warm wishes for a joyful and peaceful 23 April celebration to all children around the world.
