The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) issued a statement on the 21st anniversary of the April 24 Annan Plan referendum, in which the Turkish Cypriot people said “yes” to the plan.
The written statement released by the CTP Press Office stressed that on April 24, 2004, the Turkish Cypriot people firmly expressed their support for a solution.
Noting that while the Annan Plan and the process leading to the referendum did not bring peace to Cyprus, they resulted in many gains, the statement also stressed that the CTP continued to stand by this historical will, just as it did in the past.
Stating that the policy of maintaining the status quo was increasingly isolating the people, excluding them from international law, and darkening the future of the youth, the statement added that it was possible to build a freer, more productive and self-confident society through a solution.
The statement also expressed that the need for peace, equality, and international law was greater than ever, and that many of the problems currently being faced could be overcome through a solution.
“Unfortunately, despite the clear will of the Turkish Cypriot people, time is being wasted with so-called politics that are impossible to achieve outside of the UN framework. Today, it is necessary not only to remember this will but also to rebuild a politics that aligns with it” the statement concluded.
