Agreement reached on Pile-Yiğitler road
Date Added: 18 October 2023

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a written statement regarding the agreement reached on the Pile-Yiğitler road and responded to claims that have been voiced regarding the road works that are incompatible with the facts.

“Various statements are being made by the Greek Cypriot side about the current situation which are incompatible with the facts. It is clear that these false and distorted statements are aimed at creating perception” read the statement.

It also reminded that a consensus was reached after intensive negotiations with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus Colin Stewart.

“It is good for the public to know that no step back and/or no concessions regarding the area in question were taken. We emphasize once again that our rightful position regarding the region is preserved” it read.

It also stated that the Greek Cypriot side, which is obviously uncomfortable with the agreement, is trying to disrupt the implementation of the project with false news.

The following statement was issued by the Foreign Ministry:

“The Greek Cypriot leadership is trying to provoke the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and provoke it to react with these so-called leaked news. The TRNC authorities do not pursue any objective other than meeting a long overdue need for humanitarian purposes and are determined to maintain their constructive and prudent attitude for the completion of this project at the earliest possible time.

We regret the various statements made by some circles in the TRNC, influenced by the misperception created by the Greek Cypriot side. There is still an ongoing process and some elements will be finalized within this process. We will continue to constructively support steps that respect the status of Pile and benefit everyone living in Pile.

On the other hand, as we have stated many times before, it is a legal obligation that all plans and projects regarding the buffer zone in Cyprus are realized with our knowledge and approval, and we will continue to be a determined follower of respect for this obligation.

It would be beneficial for all parties to refrain from statements that harm the process”.
