Justice and Development Party Spokesperson Ömer Çelik made a statement regarding the attempts made by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) to block the Pile-Yigitler Road work from taking place in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

Çelik said “Neither the UN nor any other organization can look at the entire island of Cyprus through the perspective of the Greek Cypriot side.”

Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Spokesperson Ömer Çelik made statements during the AK Party Central Decision and Executive Board (MKYK) meeting chaired by the Turkish President and leader of the AK Party Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Referring to the attempt by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus to block the Pile-Yiğitler road work from taking place, Çelik stated that the AK Party Central Decision and Executive Board gave full support to the statements made by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

“No one can look and evaluate anything in Cyprus through the Greek Cypriots point of view. The Greek Cypriot Administration of South Cyprus is not the sole representative of the island, this is out of the question,” said Çelik.

Emphasizing that since there are two equal peoples and two sovereign states on the island, it is necessary to put forward the same approach and to avoid double standards, Çelik said, “If the tolerance shown to the Greek Cypriots is not shown to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus today it means that there is a double standard here. We expect the UN to evaluate this situation on the basis of equality, in a principled and consistent manner.”
