Chairman of the National Defence Committee of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), Hulusi Akar, addressed the Cyprus issue during the meeting of the Chairpersons of the Committees on National Defence and Security Matters of TURKPA Member Parliaments.

In his speech, Akar stressed, “The recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) by the Turkic world is a responsibility for all of us.”

The 2nd meeting of the Chairpersons of the Committees on National Defence and Security Matters of the Parliaments of the Turkic States Parliamentary Assembly (TURKPA) was held in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku.

In his speech at the meeting, Chairman of the National Defence Committee of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), Hulusi Akar, also touched upon the Cyprus issue, stating that the Turkic world should support the TRNC in attaining the international status it deserves.

“We believe this is not only the TRNC’s pursuit of justice, but also a reflection of the collective will of the Turkic world. The recognition of the TRNC will help establish a more balanced geopolitical structure in the Eastern Mediterranean. As the Turkic world’s gateway to the seas, it will add strategic depth to our joint security and cooperation strategies. We cannot accept the European Union acting as the spokesperson of the Greek Cypriots and exerting pressure on world leaders to prevent the TRNC from being invited to events. In order to put an end to this pressure, it is our responsibility to ensure that the TRNC is openly and strongly recognized by the Turkic world and that it holds full membership status in the international organizations of the Turkic world” he said.

“Our main goal is to protect our own rights. As the Organization of Turkic States, we must establish our own defence and security architecture. The TRNC is our brother. It is essential for all of us to protect their rights and interests” Akar concluded.
