Former President, Mustafa Akıncı, stressed that blaming Türkiye for the failure at Crans-Montana was neither fair nor accurate.

In his statement, Akıncı said, “I wish that Mr. Anastasiades could have shown the same sensitivity to the political equality concerns of the Turkish Cypriots as I did to the concerns of the Greek Cypriots.”

Former President, Mustafa Akıncı, evaluated the latest statement made by former Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades.

Stating that he read Anastasiades’ remarks as they were reflected in the press, Akıncı thanked him for his words regarding “showing sensitivity in understanding the concerns of Greek Cypriots.”

“It was never possible, nor is it possible, to reach a conclusion in Cyprus without taking into account the concerns of both communities. For this reason, throughout the entire negotiation process, I acted within this framework and took the necessary initiatives whenever required,” he said.

Akıncı stressed that, in addition to other issues, he worked towards achieving a balanced outcome that would benefit both sides, particularly concerning maps and security-guarantee matters.

“Blaming Türkiye for the failure at Crans-Montana is neither fair nor accurate,” he stressed.

“When we last met with Anastasiades in Berlin in November 2019, UN Secretary-General Guterres once again confirmed that Türkiye had shown the necessary flexibility regarding unilateral intervention. I wish that Mr. Anastasiades could have shown the same sensitivity to the political equality concerns of the Turkish Cypriots as I did to the concerns of the Greek Cypriots,” Akıncı added.
