The Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı has said that Türkiye’s and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s electricity grids will be interconnected via cable one way or the other.

“No one should have any doubts. This project will go ahead,” Arıklı told BRT on Thursday.

The public works minister said that steps on the electricity project will take place before the middle of this month.

Minister Arıklı on Thursday gave the reassurance to the public that the electricity interconnector project between Türkiye and the TRNC will be implemented and that efforts were already underway.

Pointing out that the issue along with Ercan Airport had been discussed at a high-level meeting at the presidential palace earlier this week; Arıklı said that important decisions had been taken but that he did not have the liberty of announcing what they were.

Regarding the new Ercan terminal and runway, Minister Arıklı said that test flights to the airport would begin in the second half of March and that the terminal would be ready to become operational by April.

He also announced that several airline companies in Türkiye had been granted permission to launch flights to the TRNC which would also begin in April.

“We at the moment cannot intervene in ticket prices but prices will automatically drop once there is competition,” Arıklı said.
