President Ersin Tatar expressed that there is resistance and struggle in the character of the Turkish Cypriots, stating that this struggle continues on the basis of sovereignty.

Emphasizing that the fate and future of the Turkish Cypriot people lie in their state, Tatar said that there will be no return to the negotiating table unless the sovereign equality and international status of the Turkish Cypriots are accepted.

The president was speaking at an event held on the weekend to mark the 60th anniversary of the Baf Resistance.

Delivering the opening speech at the event held at the Lefkoşa Atatürk Culture Centre, the President of the Baf Turkish Association Cenk Dökmen said that the Turkish Cypriot people owed their freedom and independence to the sacrifices made by the martyrs and the veterans.

Also speaking at the event, the Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre said that peace has prevailed in Cyprus since the 1974 Turkish Peace Operation, something the international community has failed to do in Gaza recently.

President Ersin Tatar who also addressed the event, said that there is resistance and struggle in the character of the Turkish Cypriots and that this struggle still continues.

Tatar, who stated that the struggle to reclaim the sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriot people, which was attempted to be prevented by a United Nations decision on March 4, 1964, would eventually be won, said, “We will never surrender our freedom and sovereignty; we will continue to walk with our motherland Türkiye.”

The president, emphasizing that the fate and future of the Turkish Cypriots lie in their state, stressed that an agreement that does not recognize sovereignty is no different from writing on sand.

“If sovereign equality and our international status are not accepted, we will not sit at the negotiation table,” he said.

After the speeches, a medal was presented to Fevzi Kasap, the son of Baf Commander Ali Kasap, in memory of his father.
