The 59th anniversary of the heroic Baf Resistance was marked today with a commemorative ceremony.
Turkish Cypriot martyrs who fell during the resistance against Greek Cypriot attacks were remembered with a ceremony held in front of the Baf-Limassol Martyrs’ Monument in Güzelyurt.
President Ersin Tatar, high ranking military officials, some ministers and deputies as well as representatives of institutions and members of the public attended the ceremony in front of the Baf-Limassol Martyrs Monumnet in Güzelyurt.
Wreaths were laid, a minute’s silence was observed and flags were raised to the national anthem during the ceremony.
Speeches highlighting the significance of the day were also delivered.
In his speech President Ersin Tatar referred to the events leading up to the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and said that the Turkish Cypriot people will not enter into official negotiations until their sovereign equality is recognized.
Noting that he told the newly elected Greek Cypriot leader how important the sovereign equality of Turkish Cypriots and equal international status is, President Tatar emphasized that “sovereign equality is our red line and we will never give up on it.”
