The ban on the use of plastic shopping bags (PBS), prepared to reduce environmental pollution to some extent, has been postponed until December 31, 2024 following a lawsuit by plastic shopping bag manufacturers stating that the transition period of six months was insufficient.
It had been announced last week that the price of single use plastic bags had been increased to ₺1.
Abdullah Aktolgalı, the Director of the Department of Environmental Department on Wednesday called on citizens to report supermarkets that provide free plastic bags.
He also mentioned that the price of bags will be increased two or three more times until the ban on the single use plastic bag takes effect on December 31, 2024, hoping that these price increases will to some extent deter shoppers from using more bags.
Aktolgalı also drew attention to the environmental harm caused by plastic and urged the public to reduce their plastic usage.
