The highest peak of the Five Finger Mountain range in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Selvili Tepe (Mount), is being renamed as “Birkan Uzun Selvili Tepe” in memory of Turkish Cypriot mountaineer Birkan Uzun who had climbed five of the world’s seven highest peaks.

He had died in a skiing accident last year.

Signs reading “Birkan Uzun Selvili Tepe” will be installed at Selvili Tepe today with a ceremony to be attended by Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı and Birkan Uzun’s family following an earlier decision by the cabinet to rename the peak after the late Turkish Cypriot mountaineer Birkan Uzun.

In late 2021 Birkan Uzun had placed the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) flag on the summit of Mount Vinson, the highest point in Antarctica.

Uzun, a 28-year-old investment consultant in Washington state, was on a mission to complete the Seven Summits, a mountaineering challenge that includes climbing the highest mountain peaks on each of the seven continents.

His life was cut short due to a skiing accident in the US in 2022.

Mount Selvili is the highest peak of the  Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus at an altitude of 1,024 metres.
