A British MP has voiced his support for the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
British MP Sammy Wilson, in an article in the British political magazine Politics Home, emphasized that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus should be recognized.
Wilson stated that there is no reason why the TRNC should not be recognized by the United Nations.
British MP Sammy Wilson has given his support for the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus by the world.
Expressing his view in the British political magazine Politics Home, Sammy Wilson said, “There are fully functioning governments and democratic systems on both sides of the border on the island of Cyprus.”
“There is no reason why the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus cannot be recognized as an independent state by the United Nations,” Wilson wrote in his article titled ‘Cyprus needs a Good Friday Agreement’.
Pointing to the Belfast Agreement, also known as the “Good Friday Agreement”, signed during the Northern Ireland peace process, the British MP said, “The 2010 ruling of the International Court of Justice on Kosovo’s independence should give greater legitimacy to the TRNC’s claim.”
Wilson emphasized that the Greek Cypriots rejected the settlement plans in Cyprus and asked the UK to be a mediator between the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots in this process.
“Not only are we a guarantor power of the island of Cyprus and both its communities, but we also have an international responsibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
What is clear though is that the ongoing divide and the UN-enforced ceasefire cannot continue. It is not a healthy situation for Cyprus or the strategically important Eastern Mediterranean. Peace is always a worthy outcome, and it is something which should be pursued” he wrote while concluding his article.
