Meryem Özkurt, the Director of Bayrak Radio Television Corporation, also issued a message on the occasion of 11 July Press Day.
Özkurt emphasized the important role of the press in the continuity and development of democratic order, stating that the Bayrak Radio Television Corporation strives to maintain its broadcasts with the principles of pluralism, tolerance, and broad-mindedness that constitute a democratic society.
“For the past 60 years, Bayrak Radio Television Corporation has been utilizing all channels of mass communication to make the rightful voice of the Turkish Cypriot people heard worldwide. As one of the latest examples of new generation broadcasting, the North Cyprus Smart TV application has also found its place in the world alongside private channels broadcasting in the TRNC,” she said, adding that media in North Cyprus had come a long way from the first Turkish-language newspaper to the present day, with BRT as a milestone on this path.
“Besides providing resources to the media for news production and content creation, we also make efforts to ensure the practical implementation of laws that regulate the media,” Özkurt noted.
The BRTK Director also warned about the sociological effects of fake news and information manipulation which emerged with the wider use of social media.
She added that the press played an important role in the continuity and development of democratic order in countries.
“On the occasion of Press Day, which falls on July 11th, the day when Saded, the first newspaper of the Turkish Cypriots started its publication, I sincerely congratulate the employees of BRTK and all media workers on their “Press Day” with my heartfelt wishes,” Özkurt said.
