Turkish Cypriot Buse Savaşkan, who represented Türkiye in the athletics at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France, competed in the Women’s High Jump final.
Savaşkan, who jumped 1.92 meters on August 3rd and qualified for the final, stayed at 1.86 meters in the final jumps and claimed the 10th position in the Olympics.
While the final struggle was broadcast live on BRT screens, live connections were made to Paris.
Savaşkan’s mother Faika Savaşkan stated that she was very proud that her daughter competed in the Paris Olympics and said that their next goal was the 2028 Olympics.
Savaşkan’s father İlhan Savaşkan also said that he believes that his daughter will be in the top 3 at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Savaşkan’s final jumps were also watched from the Presidential garden.
Making a statement on Savaşkan final attempt, First lady Sibel Tatar said that Savaşkan did the best she could and had made everyone proud.
Mrs. Tatar said that she believes that she will achieve greater success in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics adding “Savaşkan announced our name to the whole world, we thank her for that”.
President Ersin Tatar also said that he was very proud of Buse Savaşkan who participated in the Olympics adding that Savaşkan’s success is very important.
Stating that it was a dream for a member of the Turkish Cypriot community, under isolation, to make a name for itself at the Olympics in Paris and that this dream has come true, Tatar underlined that Savaşkan is a source of pride for the Turkish Cypriot community.
Explaining that Savaşkan’s success contained a message to all youth, Tatar said Savaşkan had achieved a success by progressing on this difficult path and expressed the hope that her success will be an example for all Turkish Cypriot youth.
