Ahead of the fourth hearing of the İsias Hotel trial, Ruşen Karakaya, President of the Champion Angels Association, expressed serious concerns about the upcoming court decision.

Speaking to the Turkish News Agency (TAK), Karakaya emphasized the need for a “potential intent” verdict in the case, saying, “If a potential intent decision is not reached, we will say ‘justice has collapsed, justice has lost, justice has failed.’”

In a statement to TAK on Sunday, Ruşen Karakaya who heads the association established to keep the memory of the Champion Angels alive highlighted the gravity of the situation, referring to the rapid collapse of the hotel during the February 6, 2023 earthquake, which claimed the lives of many, including their children.”

She stressed that each visit to Adıyaman for the hearings brings renewed feelings of anxiety, anger, and sadness for the families.

“Everything is clear with the İsias Hotel, which crumbled in seconds and became a grave for our children. The precedent has been set, which means our court panel may feel more at ease. A potential intent decision is essential for the İsias case,” she stated.

She also underscored the broader significance of the case, saying, “We are here as the plaintiffs for the 35 losses in Adıyaman, but this struggle is not just our struggle—it is Cyprus’s struggle. That is why support is crucial for us.”

Ahead of the hearing, Hasan Esendağlı, President of the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association, provided an update, mentioning that the expert report is not expected to be ready in time for the upcoming session.

He anticipated that the court would grant an extension to complete procedural matters and the expert report.

“We believe that the expert report will mark the transition to the final phase of the case,” Esendağlı explained, noting that the report would evaluate not only the core samples but also all factors contributing to the building’s collapse, making it a critical piece of evidence.

Durali Güçlüsoy, Undersecretary of the Prime Ministry State Planning Organization, also weighed in, emphasizing the government’s continued commitment to the İsias Hotel case, which he described as a “shared cause.”

Güçlüsoy expressed hope that the expected expert report would be finalized and that the consolidation of the cases would occur during the fifth hearing.
