Chemicals Law on the agenda
Date Added: 24 June 2024

The “Chemicals Law” will be discussed and voted in the General Assembly of the Republic’s Assembly today.

National Unity Party MP and Committee Chairman Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu said, “With the Chemicals Law, we will have passed a very important law in terms of our health and environment.”

The draft law, which has been worked on by the EU Coordination Centre for nearly 15 years but has not been passed by the sub-committees of the Parliament, will come to the agenda of the General Assembly today.

The ‘Chemicals Law’, which was unanimously adopted by the Ad Hoc and Special Committee formed to discuss the European Union Harmonization Draft Laws at the beginning of June and referred to the agenda of the General Assembly, is expected to be unanimously adopted in the Parliament.

Answering the questions of the Turkish News Agency in Cyprus (TAK) before the parliamentary session, UBP MP and Committee Chairman Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu thanked everyone who contributed to the efforts to prepare this law.

He emphasized that the purpose of the law is to ensure the protection of human health and the environment by controlling the negative effects and risks that may occur as a result of the production, import and all kinds of use of chemicals within the scope of the law.

It covers various aspects, including the classification, packaging, labelling, and information exchange of chemicals, as well as the placing of biocidal products and detergents on the market.

Rules regarding the use, storage, inspection and enforcement of hazardous chemicals are also included.

The law emphasizes the responsibility of manufacturers, importers and users to ensure that chemicals do not have negative effects.

To effectively manage chemicals, a Chemicals Technical Committee will be established, consisting of members from the ministry, private sector, and relevant chambers.

Additionally, the responsibilities of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Department of the Ministry of Tourism will be divided during the implementation of the law.

The enactment of this law is expected to ensure effective and stable control of chemicals in line with EU and Turkish legislation, benefiting health and environment.
