Following the trilateral meeting in New York, the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides held a press conference, emphasizing that they are not yet at the stage of resuming formal negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
Despite the informal dinner with President Ersin Tatar hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Christodoulides indicated that there was no significant progress in the discussions.
Christodoulides noted, “I did not hear anything new from Mr Tatar on certain constructive points,” adding that no specific date had been set for the next steps in the process.
He highlighted that while no clear timeline for future actions was established, there was an agreement to meet with Tatar in Cyprus to evaluate the potential opening of new border crossings as part of confidence-building measures.
When asked about the meaning of “expanded meetings,” Christodoulides clarified that these refer to discussions involving the three guarantor countries—Türkiye, Greece, and the United Kingdom.
He mentioned that both Athens and London have shown a positive stance on this matter.
Regarding the mission of María Angela Holguin, Christodoulides stated that the Greek Cypriot side supports the continuation of her efforts.
However, he emphasized that the primary role in the Cyprus issue should remain with the UN Secretary-General rather than shifting to another individual.
