Coalition government holds press conference to evaluate 1st year

The National Unity Party (UBP)-Democrat Party (DP)-Rebirth Party (YDP) coalition held a press conference on Wednesday aimed at informing the public on the government’s accomplishments during its first year in office.

The UBP-DP-YDP coalition had been established on May 12, 2022.

Speaking at the press conference, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said that the UBP-DP-YDP coalition government has been working for the prosperity of the Turkish Cypriot people since it took office a year ago on May 12, 2022.

“We have been working towards achieving great goals and targets. We shall continue to walk this path with stability,” he said.

Üstel pointed out that the government had carried out successful accomplishments on in a wide range of issues ranging from the economy, health, transportation to tourism and education.

The prime minister said that the government also attached great importance to reforms and passing new legislation.

He pointed out that 65 laws had been passed and up to 80 draft bills brought before parliament over the past year.

Üstel reminded that the government had taken office at a time when the Turkish Lira was losing value against foreign currencies and when the world was experiencing economic crisis due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Also touching upon the devastating February 6 earthquakes, Üstel said that the Turkish Cypriot people had suffered great losses along with Türkiye.

“We lost 49 of our citizens in the twin-earthquake. Let the public rest assured, we are following the legal process in Türkiye concerning the İsias Hotel collapse closely. We proved during the earthquake that our bond with motherland Türkiye is beyond that of siblings. We were the first to assist recovery efforts,” he said.

The prime minister also shared information about ongoing and future infrastructure projects such as the construction of new schools, roads, irrigation networks, 4.5G internet and maritime transportation.
