The Republican Turkish Party’s (CTP) candidate Sami Özuslu has emerged as the winner of Sunday’s Parliamentary and Local Administration By-Election, receiving 43.76% of the votes.

The CTP now holds 19 of the 50 seats in the TRNC parliament.

Republican Turkish Party candidate Sami Özuslu was the winner of Sunday’s by-election, securing his party’s 19th seat in the 50 seat TRNC parliament.

The seat has been vacant since last year when the leader of the People’s Party Kudret Özersay had resigned in protest of the current government.

Özuslu received 26,288 votes, defeating his closest rival National Unity Party (UBP) candidate Ali Başman who managed to receive 22,842 votes.

Turnout for the election was the lowest since 2018, remaining just below of 30 per cent with 29.82%.

According to the High Electoral Council (YSK), the parliamentary vote percentages based on the 713 ballot boxes opened are as follows:

  • Tacan Reynar (TDP): 1.24%
  • Ali Başman (UBP): 37.97%
  • Sami Özuslu (CTP): 43.76%
  • Figen Yaman Lesinger (YDP): 4.66%
  • Serhan Aktunç (DP): 6.60%
  • Umut Ersoy (Independence Road): 1.30%
  • Çetin Sadeli (Independent): 0.83%
  • Abdullah Korkmazhan (Independent): 1.28%
  • Alper Özsakınç (Independent): 0.19%
  • Talip Sancar (Independent): 0.86%
  • Meriç Erülkü (Independent): 0.49%
  • Mert Taşkın (Independent): 0.68%
  • Nazım Özsever (Independent): 0.14%

Meanwhile, voters in the Lefkoşa neighbourhood of Yenicami also elected a new mukhtar on Sunday.

Selim Özdemir who received 31.06% of the votes became the new mukhtar of Yenicami located in the walled city of Lefkoşa.
