The leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman has said that it was important to evaluate the outcome of Sunday’s election carefully.

Sami Özuslu for his part said that he will honour his election promises for bringing change to the country.

Addressing a jubilant crowd of party supporters at the CTP headquarters on Sunday evening, the CTP leader Tufan Erhürman said that two strong messages had come out of the ballot.

He said that firstly the low turnout showed the Turkish Cypriot public did not approve of the current political situation in the country and secondly by electing Özuslu demanded change.

“We have respect for everyone, to those who voted for us, those who were unable to vote today and even our rivals. We would like to thank all those who contested in the election,” he said, adding that it was important to evaluate the election results carefully.

Also addressing supporters, Sami Özuslu said that his election was not enough for the CTP to form a new government but still it heraled a new period in the country’s politics.

He said that he will continue to work with his party to bring change to the country.

“We must have change. This is what we promised throughout our election campaign. The economic conditions and the undemocratic practices have upset the public. We have received your message for change. However we must also evaluate the reasons why turnout was so low,” Özuslu said.
