Cyprus Summit in Geneva

The 5+1 informal Cyprus summit, held in Geneva after four years since Crans-Montana and hosted by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, began on Monday evening with a dinner in honor of the delegations.

The dinner, which lasted approximately an hour and a half, was attended by the parties from Cyprus as well as the guarantor countries – Türkiye, Greece, and the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, after the dinner, President Ersin Tatar met with political party delegations present in Geneva and exchanged views.

The focus shifts to bilateral meetings on Tuesday.

The UN Secretary-General will hold one-on-one talks with the parties, followed by a broader meeting with all participants.

The leaders will once again present their positions at the table.

Here are the details of Monday’s developments and Tuesday’s agenda.

The informal Cyprus meeting in Geneva, hosted by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has begun.

The expanded informal meeting started at 8pm Cyprus time at the Intercontinental Hotel with a dinner hosted by the UN Secretary-General for the heads of delegations.

Before the dinner, UN Secretary-General Guterres welcomed President Ersin Tatar, Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, and the UK’s Minister of State for Europe and North America, Stephen Doughty, at the entrance.

The dinner was arranged with two separate tables.

At the main table, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his Deputy Rosemary DiCarlo were seated alongside President Ersin Tatar, Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, and UK Minister of State Stephen Doughty.

At the second table, the leaders’ Special Representatives, Güneş Onar and Menelaos Menelaou, UN Peacekeeping Mission Chief Colin Stewart, Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Mehmet Kemal Bozay, the Greek Deputy Minister Alexandra Papadopulou, and the UK High Commissioner Michael Tatham were present.

After the dinner, President Tatar met with political party delegations in Geneva and exchanged views.

Meanwhile, the informal Cyprus Summit will continue on Tuesday at 10am Cyprus time at the Intercontinental Hotel with bilateral meetings between the UN Secretary-General and each delegation.

During the bilateral meetings with the Secretary-General, each delegation leader will be accompanied by five representatives.

The UN directly coordinates with the delegations for the scheduling of these meetings.

Following this, at 12:30pm Cyprus time, the expanded-format 5+1 informal meeting will commence at the UN’s Geneva Office with the participation of all parties.

The 5+1 informal meeting will begin with an opening speech by the UN Secretary-General, followed by statements from the delegation leaders.

The expanded informal meeting is expected to conclude at 3:30pm Cyprus time.
