Delegations announced for 5+1 Informal Cyprus meeting in Geneva

The delegations set to attend next week’s 5+1 informal Cyprus meeting, hosted by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, have been announced.

The meeting will take place in Geneva on March 17-18, bringing together the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides, along with the three guarantor countries: Türkiye, Greece, and the United Kingdom.

President Ersin Tatar will represent the Turkish Cypriot side, accompanied by his negotiation team, including Special Representative Güneş Onar, Legal Affairs Advisor Sülen Karabacak, Confidence-Building Measures and Bilateral Technical Committees Coordinator Seniha Birand Çınar, and Special Advisor on International Relations and Diplomacy Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Işıksal.

Political party representatives attending the meeting include Prime Minister and National Unity Party (UBP) leader Ünal Üstel, UBP Secretary-General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, Democrat Party (DP) leader and Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu, DP MP Serhat Akpınar, Rebirth Party (YDP) MP Talip Atalay, Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman, and CTP MP Fikri Toros.

Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu and a delegation from the ministry will also be present.

Additionally, the leader of the People’s Party (HP) Kudret Özersay and HP Foreign Relations Committee member Ahmet Tokatlıoğlu, as well as the Social Democratic Party’s (TDP) Foreign Relations Secretary Mine Atlı and Party Assembly member, Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı, will be travelling to Geneva for the talks.

A significant number of journalists from the Turkish Cypriot media will also cover the meeting.

According to a draft program shared by the UN, the meeting will begin on Monday at 8:00 PM Cyprus time with a dinner hosted by the UN Secretary-General at the Intercontinental Hotel, where delegation heads will be accompanied by one representative each.

A photo session with Guterres and the delegation heads will take place before the dinner.

The schedule continues on Tuesday, March 18, with bilateral meetings between the UN Secretary-General and each delegation, starting at 10:00 AM Cyprus time.

These meetings will include up to five additional representatives per delegation.

The UN will coordinate directly with the delegations for scheduling.

At 12:30 PM, the broader 5+1 informal meeting will commence at the UN’s Geneva Office (Palais des Nations), with delegation heads addressing the session following the opening speech by Guterres.

Each delegation will be accompanied by five representatives. Before the meeting, a “family photo” will be taken.

The UN has encouraged delegations to ensure meaningful participation of women in their teams. The meeting is expected to conclude by 3:30 PM Cyprus time.
