UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo met with Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot former negotiators within the scope of her Cyprus contacts.

The leader of the People’s Party Prof. Dr. Kudret Özersay, who attended the meeting, evaluated Di Carlo’s visit to the BRT.

Özersay said that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres may appoint a special representative to Cyprus at some stage.

Emphasizing the radical global change, Özersay said, “We see that the role of the UN in the world is decreasing, not increasing.”

The leader of the People’s Party, Prof. Dr. Kudret Özersay, commented on the recent visit of UN Under-Secretary General Rosemary DiCarlo to Cyprus.

Özersay mentioned that DiCarlo had a useful meeting with the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot former Cyprus negotiators, but acknowledged that there is still a difference of opinion between the parties.

He speculated that the UN Secretary General may appoint a special representative in the future, but emphasized the need for clear powers and common ground to avoid getting caught in an endless negotiation process.

Özersay also raised concerns about the diminishing role of the UN in world politics, particularly in light of the US signaling possible withdrawal from the organization.

He highlighted the changing dynamics in international relations and the increasing involvement of other actors.

Lastly, Özersay noted “While the comprehensive solution efforts in Cyprus continue, we will see regional cooperation efforts involving Türkiye, Israel and the USA. We can see the US vision of regional cooperation without recognition.”
