The Disaster Management and Response Exercise 2024, coordinated by the Civil Defense Organization, took place yesterday in the Gemikonağı area.

The exercise included various scenarios, such as earthquake response, search and rescue operations, and sea-based rescue activities, all of which were successfully executed.

In the opening speech, Central District Officer Niyazi Öztürk highlighted the importance of the exercise in refreshing skills and addressing gaps in preparedness for potential disaster situations.

He emphasized that such exercises are crucial for readiness in the face of natural disasters.

Atilla Karaca, Head of the Civil Defense Organization, stressed that the exercise aimed to evaluate the country’s preparedness for disasters and emergencies, enhance coordination and collaboration between partner institutions, and minimize loss of life and property during emergencies.

Karaca also noted efforts to update their inventory, modernize equipment, and expand personnel training in line with technological and scientific advancements.

Following the speeches, participants carried out earthquake response scenarios, focusing on search and rescue operations, as well as rescue activities at sea.

The exercise demonstrated effective coordination among teams and swift response capabilities.

After the drill, attendees visited mobile units and a tent city set up for the exercise, along with a tour of the Civil Defense Search and Rescue Exhibition.

In the closing speech, AFAD Deputy President Hamza Taşdelen discussed ongoing efforts to combat earthquake risks, emphasizing the need to minimize disaster risks, ensure effective disaster risk management, and maintain preparedness for future events. He reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening measures and readiness to handle potential disaster scenarios.
