Salih Can Doratlı, Chairman of the Board of Bayrak Radio Television Corporation (BRT), and Meryem Özkurt, Director of BRT, both issued messages on the occasion of 11 July Press Day, celebrating media professionals and underscoring the critical role of ethical journalism in a democratic society.

Salih Can Doratlı celebrated Press Day by acknowledging the invaluable role of media professionals in democratic and modern societies.

He emphasized that the press must operate with accuracy, impartiality, integrity, and honesty while fulfilling its duty to disseminate information and advance society.

“While celebrating 11 July Press Day, I want to highlight the crucial role you, esteemed members of the press, play in promoting our country and its cultural richness. You are vital in providing our people with accurate and impartial information, promoting our country’s tourism potential, and preserving our cultural heritage,” Doratlı said.

He also stressed the need for self-regulation mechanisms within the press community to ensure the maintenance of ethical journalism.

“None of these elements can exist independently of one another. However, in this era where the speed of information dissemination has significantly accelerated and access to platforms for spreading information has become widespread, the pollution of information poses a danger to societies. The balance between quality and quantity is crucial and impacts the value attributed to the press.”

Meryem Özkurt, in her message, emphasized the indispensable role of an independent press in the development and sustainability of democratic societies.

She highlighted the challenges of ensuring the dissemination of accurate information in the digital age, where misinformation can easily spread.

“In this digital age where accessing information has become very easy, obtaining accurate information has become equally challenging.

The rapid spread of misinformation online means we often cannot be sure of the accuracy of what we read and see. This underscores the importance of media outlets committed to ethical journalism and disseminating information from accurate sources.”

She concluded by reiterating BRT’s commitment to public broadcasting responsibilities and ethical principles.
