The Democrat Party on Wednesday reiterated its support for a two-state solution in Cyprus.

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin on Wednesday, met with Democrat Party Chairman and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, Fikri Ataoğlu, and party officials as part of her planned meetings with stakeholders, civil society organisations and political leaders on the island.

Evaluating the meeting with a written statement, the Democrat Party reiterated its support for a two-state solution and said that a majority of Turkish Cypriots had begun to support this new policy.

It said that these views had been conveyed to the UN envoy during the meeting.

The DP said that Turkish Cypriots desired a solution that would allow them to live peacefully alongside Greek Cypriots in their own separate state as they have done so for the past 50 years.

It highlighted that the priority of the Democrat Party is to ensure that Turkish Cypriots embrace the world without conflict.

The DP also underlined that Türkiye’s active and effective guarantee was of vital importance for the Turkish Cypriots and that they were against any model that would leave the future of Turkish Cypriots in the hands of Greek Cypriots.

The statement also emphasized the need for the lifting of embargoes and suggested that the property issue could be effectively resolved through the Immovable Property Commission established in line with the recommendations of the European Court of Human Rights.
