Erdoğan-Mitsotakis meet

Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said “It will be in the interest of the entire region to reach a just, lasting and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue based on the realities on the island”.

The Turkish President made the statement during his meeting with the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Greece.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is visiting Greece as part of the fifth meeting of the High Level Cooperation Council.

Following his bilateral meeting with Greek President Katerina Sakelaropoulou, Erdoğan received Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Speaking at a joint press conference, Turkish President Erdoğan wished to resolve the existing problems between Türkiye and Greece through constructive dialogue, good neighbourliness and joint efforts within the framework of international law.

“There is no issue between Türkiye and Greece that cannot be resolved,” Erdoğan said on Thursday.

“It is our hope to resolve our issues via constructive dialogue, and good neighbourly relations within the framework of international law,” said Erdoğan at a joint news conference with Mitsotakis.

He reiterated that it would be in the interest of the entire region to reach a just, lasting and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue based on the realities on the island adding that they want to turn the Aegean into a sea of peace and cooperation.

“We aspire to set an example to the world with the joint steps we will take as Türkiye and Greece,” the Turkish president said.

About the meeting, Erdoğan said both sides exchanged views on their positions regarding the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis who for his part pointed out that there is a difference of opinion between the two countries on the Cyprus issue, argued that for Greece there is no solution other than the United Nations Security Council resolutions and that dialogue between the parties should resume.

The Greek Prime Minister stated that the issues of the continental shelf and the Exclusive Economic Zone in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean could also be brought to the agenda when the necessary conditions arise.
