Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during his visit to New York for the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations.

During the meeting, Erdoğan stated that the possibilities for solutions other than the federal model in Cyprus could be discussed at a meeting under the auspices of the UN with the participation of the parties involved.

Erdoğan also reiterated to Guterres that the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as a state would be the key to a solution that takes into account the realities on the island.

The Presidential Communications Directorate of Türkiye issued a statement regarding President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The statement noted that President Erdoğan met with Secretary-General Guterres at the UN building in New York during his visit for the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations.

During the meeting, Erdoğan indicated that the Turkish Cypriot side seeks recognition of its rights, such as sovereign equality and equal international status, and stated that the possibilities for solutions other than the federal model could be discussed at a meeting under the auspices of the UN with the participation of the parties involved.

Erdoğan also conveyed to Guterres that the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as a state would be the key to a solution that takes into account the realities on the island.
