Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stressed that there could be no positive aspect to Russia’s approval of its nuclear doctrine.

Speaking at a press conference after completing his contacts at the G20 Leaders’ Summit, Erdoğan stated that a war involving the use of nuclear weapons could have no positive outcome.

He added that NATO should consider Russia’s move carefully.

“I hope that we will quickly establish a definite ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia and thus secure the peace that the world is waiting for” Erdoğan said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a press conference after completing his engagements at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he answered questions from journalists.

When asked about Russia’s approval of its nuclear doctrine, Erdoğan noted that a war involving nuclear weapons could have no positive side.

“First and foremost, we cannot say that there is any positive side to a war involving nuclear weapons. Especially in recent times, the missiles used by Ukraine demonstrate where this situation has led and will lead. These are certainly not positive developments” he said.

“Against all these negative developments, Türkiye maintains its position and we expect this situation to quickly turn toward peace, and we are taking steps to encourage peace and recommending such steps to the parties involved,” Erdoğan added.

Highlighting that the NATO officials should also consider Russia’s move, Erdoğan pointed out that Russia has the strength and measures to protect itself.

He also stressed that, as a NATO member, Türkiye is also responsible for taking steps to protect itself.

The Turkish President further stressed that Türkiye must maintain bilateral relations with its neighbours, Ukraine and Russia.

“I hope that we will soon achieve a definitive ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia and thereby secure the peace that the world is expecting” Erdoğan concluded.
