The leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Tufan Erhürman, stated that the Cyprus summit held in Geneva was meaningful in terms of initiating dialogue.
Evaluating the summit on a program he attended on BRT, Erhürman said, “The UN Secretary-General has built a bridge connecting yesterday to tomorrow.”
The leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party, Tufan Erhürman, evaluated the Cyprus summit in Geneva during his appearance on BRT.
Noting that since 2021, there has been no environment for dialogue and no significant steps have been taken regarding confidence-building measures, Erhürman stated, “Considering that there has been no dialogue since 2021, the fact that a dialogue has now been established and will continue is meaningful.”
“There was no need to travel to Geneva with large delegations just to reach a six-point consensus. There is nothing tangible or concrete. Which of these points necessitated the presence of the guarantor countries?” he stressed.
“This was neither a comprehensive solution negotiation nor a form of cooperation. The six points are not new; they have been discussed and implemented from time to time in the past. If the intended cooperation refers to collaboration between two states, such a thing did not happen” Erhürman added.
Stating that the UN Secretary-General’s sole motivation in inviting the parties to Geneva was to “initiate a dialogue,” the CTP leader said, “Dialogue has begun, and the decision to appoint a personal envoy has been made.”
Reiterating his earlier statement, Erhürman said, “The Secretary-General has built a bridge connecting yesterday to tomorrow.”
Highlighting that a resolution can only be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy, he described the outcome as productive in this regard, saying, “Dialogue is better than no dialogue.”
CTP Leader Erhürman also stressed that the lack of a solution was detrimental to both communities, noting that not only Turkish Cypriots but also Greek Cypriots need a resolution.
