The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) has expressed its gratitude to the European Union (EU) for a €2.6 million financial contribution aimed at supporting the identification and return of remains of missing individuals in 2025.
The initiative seeks to provide closure to families who have endured decades of uncertainty.
The EU, as the largest financial contributor, has provided a total of €41.1 million to the project since 2007.
Established in 1981 under an agreement between the two sides in Cyprus and operating under UN auspices, the CMP began its project on exhumation, identification, and return of remains in 2006.
To date, the CMP has identified and returned the remains of 1,051 missing persons from both communities, allowing families to hold dignified burials and achieve a measure of peace.
The continued EU support underscores the importance of the CMP’s humanitarian mission in fostering reconciliation and healing on the island.
