Date Added: 25 August 2023

Parliament convened for an extraordinary session on Thursday upon the request of the Republican Turkish Party and two independent deputies.

During the meeting, the tension with the UN due to the intervention on the Pile-Yiğitler road, the economic crisis affecting the country, the tax break given to Ercan Airport’s holding company T&T, and the increase in the sale of goods to foreigners were on the agenda.

Meanwhile, parliament convened for a second extraordinary session on Friday to discuss a number of draft laws prepared by the government.

Addressing MPs at the extraordinary session, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel drew attention to the economic problems that have been experienced since the pandemic and noted that an economic crisis was not only impacting the TRNC but the world as a whole.

He said that they as the government were working hard to preserve the public’s purchasing power with the means at their disposable.

Üstel continued to give details regarding the steps they have taken to assist the public such as raising the cost-of-living increment paid out to public servants.

Touching upon the increase in the number of foreigners who wish to purchase property and real-estate in the country, Üstel said that they were working on preparing a law to counter problems that may arise from this situation which they will try to get parliament to approve as soon as possible.

Üstel admitted that the growing demand had spurred an unplanned construction boom in the country which called for new measures.

Stating that experts working on the issue in Türkiye were also brought in, Üstel noted that the work to be carried out will include population planning as well as zoning.

Touching upon the issue of Ercan Airport, Üstel said that they are committed to swiftly solving all anomalies at the airport in order for it to be fully operational.

Noting that there were security problems at the old airport which had been addressed with the opening of the new airport terminal, Üstel stated that their aim was for people living in the UK to be able to come to the country conveniently and added that they have ensured that the airport was opened.
