Fire in Ağıllar area destroys 300 acres

A large fire broke out on Sunday morning in the Ağıllar area located along the southern slopes of the Five Finger Mountains, the fire services announced, bringing it under control later in the afternoon.

The fire which was fanned by strong winds and destroyed close to 300 acres of trees, brush and Maki vegetation reignited on Sunday night but was swiftly put out by firefighting teams.

A fire helicopter was called in to deal with the blaze, along with fire trucks and water tankers.

According to a statement from the Cyprus Turkish Security Forces, the helicopter made 10 runs.

The ground forces were supported by trucks and teams from the Forestry Department, the Civil Defence Organisation, the Turkish Peace Forces in Cyprus and Cyprus Turkish Security Forces.

The firefighting efforts were coordinated using drones.

Cooling efforts are currently being continued.

One firefighter was injured.

The cause of the fire is not known.
