Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu has renewed the call for the political recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) during the Islamic Cooperation Foreign Ministers meeting held in New York.

Speaking at the Annual Coordination Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which was held in New York within the framework of the 77th United Nations General Assembly meeting, Ertuğruloğlu said, “The Turkish Cypriot people want the official recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the reaffirmation of their vested rights, namely the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot State.”

In his speech, Ertuğruloğlu said that they expect the member states of the Organization to take concrete steps quickly to officially recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and to establish relations with the Turkish Cypriot State to help it overcome the inhumane restrictions and embargoes imposed by the Greek Cypriot side.

Emphasizing that the Cyprus problem is a status issue, Foreign Minister Ertuğruloğlu said, “Unfortunately, it was misdiagnosed by the UN Security Council.  Both peoples on the island are sovereign equals and any effort to resolve this issue must take this fact into account.”

Stating that negotiations on the Cyprus issue will only be possible under these conditions, Ertuğruloğlu gave information about the new vision of the TRNC in the face of new dynamics.

Noting that over 50 years have been lost in the negotiations based on a federation model in Cyprus, Ertuğruloğlu said that therefore, the Turkish Cypriot side declared that after the collapse of the Cyprus Conference in Crans-Montana in July 2017, the time had come to explore other options in Cyprus.

“As the Turkish Cypriot side, we brought our new vision to the table at the Cyprus talks held in Geneva in April 2021, with the hope and belief that it will provide much-needed stability, security and cooperation in and around the island of Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriot side believes that an agreement within the framework of good neighbourly relations on the island can be concluded between the two existing states on the basis of sovereign equality and equal international status. Therefore, the Turkish Cypriot people demand the official recognition of the TRNC and the reaffirmation of their vested rights, namely the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot State” said Ertuğruloğlu.
