The Ministry of Foreign Ministry on Friday critized the Greek Cypriot administration on its ongoing armament campaign as well as the Israeli Defence Minister’s visit to South Cyprus.

In a written statement issued on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs slammed the Greek Cypriot administration over its continuing armament activities.

“Our Ministry has repeatedly brought to the attention of the international community, both verbally and in writing, that the Greek Cypriot Administration continues to increase its armament activities and that this policy is leading to an arms race,” the statement read.

The ministry also criticized countries which directly or indirectly supported these activities.

“Some States, knowingly or unknowingly, are encouraging the aggressive policy of the Greek Cypriot Administration, which is poisoning the current climate of peace and stability on the island.  We see the official visit of the Israeli Minister of Defence to South Cyprus as such a move,” the statement added.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that neither Israel nor the Greek Cypriot Administration had the right to speak or act on behalf of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the Turkish Cypriot People.

“We urge Israel, one of the countries located in our region, to refrain from taking any steps that would serve to support the provocative policies of the Greek Cypriot Administration, which in turn may have a negative impact on the environment of peace and tranquillity on the island and lead to an arms race,” the Foreign Ministry statement stressed.

The ministry also called on Israel to evaluate the TRNC’s proposal for a two-state solution which it added was the only way to ensure that the Turkish Cypriot people lived in security.

“The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will also be pleased to establish good relations with Israel,” the Foreign Ministry statement concluded.
