The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) announced that it received €160,000 in support from the German government.
According to information provided by the Committee, this amount raises the total financial aid from the German government to 960,000 Euros since 2006.
In a statement, it was stressed that these donations contributed to the Committee’s goal of identifying the remains of missing persons and returning them to their families.
The statement noted that the aim was to end the uncertainty that has affected families for many years.
The statement added that the CMP was established in 1981 through an agreement between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders under the auspices of the United Nations.
“The Missing Persons Project in Cyprus, financed by the European Union, became operational in 2006 and undertakes missions to exhume missing persons, identify them, and return them to their families” the statement noted.
“So far, a total of 1,051 missing persons from both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot backgrounds have been identified and returned to their families through a proper burial ceremony. The Missing Persons Committee requires donor support to continue this bi-communal project” the statement concluded.
